SSH case study 2 02

Delivering a Rapid Roofing Solution for a Live Retail Store in Eastbourne

SSH Case Study Roofing Solution

Introduction

When the roof of an operational retail store in Eastbourne began leaking, the risk to stock, interiors, and business continuity escalated quickly. The client needed an immediate, reliable solution, not a patch job, and one that wouldn’t disrupt day-to-day trading.

SSH Building was appointed to carry out the full flat roof replacement, with all works carefully planned around retail hours and live operations. The project called for speed, accuracy, and total control over environmental risk, especially with poor weather in the forecast.

Project Overview

The existing flat roof had deteriorated significantly, allowing water ingress into the building. Continued rainfall risked further damage to interior finishes, customer-facing areas, and merchandise.

The client’s priority was clear: resolve the water ingress quickly and permanently, without closing the store or impacting trade. That meant working to tight deadlines, maintaining full weather protection at all times, and ensuring the final roofing solution could withstand high-traffic, high-exposure use.

Work Completed

SSH Building delivered a full strip and replacement of the roofing system, including:

 – Removal and disposal of the failed flat roof surface

 – Inspection, preparation, and repair of the existing roof deck

 – Installation of a new flat roofing system, specified for retail and commercial use

 – Formation of new upstands, terminations, and perimeter edge details

 – Integration of weatherproof junctions to all adjacent building features

 – End-of-day protection planning to maintain watertightness throughout the works

Managing Risk in a Live Retail Setting

The job presented two key risks: maintaining safe public access during the works, and protecting the exposed roof area from unpredictable weather.

To manage these challenges, the SSH team implemented:

 – A phased programme structured around dry weather periods

 – Daily review of weather forecasts to adapt working plans in real time

 – Strict protocols to leave the roof fully watertight at the end of each working day

 – Ongoing coordination with store managers to avoid customer disruption and manage access points

This careful planning allowed the store to remain open throughout the project, with no impact on staff or customer experience.

Outcome

All works were completed on time and within the agreed budget. The new flat roof provided the client with:

 – A durable, long-term waterproofing solution

 – Zero disruption to trading, with continuous public access maintained

 – Peace of mind going into the winter period, knowing the roof was fully weatherproof

The client expressed strong satisfaction with the delivery, particularly the speed of response, the professionalism of on-site teams, and the high standard of finish achieved under pressure.

Conclusion

This project is a clear example of SSH Building’s ability to respond quickly and deliver roofing works in high-pressure, live environments. By combining fast mobilisation with careful risk planning, we provided the client with exactly what was needed: a clean result, no disruption, and protection where it mattered.
